Plugging Away On Pligg

I have been busy researching various options for a content management system or CMS. There is this new site I am working out the design for and I want user-generated content to drive it. This has led to a Pligg install on local-host. A little legwork was required up-front if I was going to run Pligg as a test-bed. I had to install and run several servers(Apache, MySQL, PHP) local that I had not needed before in order to test Pligg and determine if it would provide the functionality I wanted. Luckily, there are a few packages out there that make this easy. I chose WAMP5, it had everything I needed and all-in-one install which went pretty smooth. Soon I was logging in god and Pligg seemed a happy pig, er I mean CMF.

Now that I’ve got this far, the next hurdle will be finding a pligg module that give me some additional functionality. If I cannot find one, I will build one myself. Which leads me to speculating that I might get a lot more out of designing & developing my own pligg module rather than finding and modifying a existing one. Of course, time is a factor that cannot be ignored.

While hunting and pecking about in the Pligg forums, I ran across a user request for an integration of Pligg and Elgg, which from what I can tell, would be sweet. My desire for Digg style ranking with the look of feel of it is all about Me-Me-Me style of MySpace could be put to good use by both the developer and the end-user. However, the rational voice just kicked in and said, “Don’t be ridiculous! That would be complete overkill and would look like a mash-up disaster waiting to dot-bomb.”

Wish me luck and if you have any input it would be greatly appreciated in the comments section.
